disturbances arising therefrom, and, owing to its inacces-sibility, the obstacles to be overcome in its treatment. The prostate is a musculo-glandular organ enveloped ina fibrous capsule. It is situated at and embraces the neckof the bladder. It is about the size and shape of a horsechestnut, with its base directed towards the bladder andits apex in front. It lies upon the rectum, being separatedtherefrom only by loose fascia. Its transverse diameter atthe base measures one and one-half inches, its antero-posterior diameter (which corresponds with the length of 11 12 PROSTATE GLAND AND ADNEXA. the prostatic urethra) is one and one-quarter inches, andits depth three-quarters of an inch. It consists of two lateral lobes of equal size. Somewriters mention a third or middle lobe, but this is re-garded by most authorities (and it will be so consideredby the author) only as a pathological condition. Theurethra passes through the anterior third of the gland,though occasionally the posterior.
