This is the triangular surface bounded 18 ESSENTIALS OF OBSTETRICS. laterally by the labia minora and below by the margin ofthe vaginal orifice. Its covering is mucous membrane. Atits apex is the glans clitoridis. At the middle of its base,or immediately above it, is the meatus urethrae. This ap-pears as a small tubercle or prominence with a median cleft.The meatus lies 2 cm. (f inch) below the glans clitoridis,and 2.5 cm. (1 inch) above the fourchette, in the nullipara.An intricate plexus of veins immediately underlies themucous membrane. This is the pars intermedia, so calledfrom the fact that it connects the opposite vestibular bulbswith each other and with the veins of the clitoris. Fig. 2.

The bulbi vestibuli. The bulbi vestibuli are two leech-shaped masses of veinsabout 3.5 cm. in length, and are situated one on either side ANATOMY OF FEMALE GENITAL ORGANS. 19 of the mesial line behind the labia, opposite the vaginal orificeand the base of the vestibule. In extent they reach from thelevel of the posterior margin of the vaginal orifice nearly tothe clitoris. They lie between the bulbo-cavemosus muscleand the vaginal wall, immediately in front of the triangularligament. They communicate freely with the veins of thelabia, the vagina, the perineum, the glans clitoridis, and withother neighboring venous plexuses. Each is enclosed ina fibrous sheath. Their internal structure comprises, in addi-tion to venous plexuses and connective tissue, some smoothmuscular fibres. The bulbs correspond to the bulbs of theurethra in the male.
