History

[edit]
  • 1883 Named: DICKY
  • 1889 Registered to Brisbane shipping agents Brydon, Jones and Co. When enrolled at Brisbane the name was shown as DICKEY.
  • 12.02.1893 Left Rockhampton for Brisbane, carrying 11 crew and 40 tonnes of sand. She fought a strong gale off Caloundra but was driven ashore above Point Wickham in heavy north-easterly weather on Caloundra Head, Queensland. All crew saved. The engines being removed and used in the Lady Norman. An inquiry found that her loss was due to negligent navigation and the master John Summer Beattie lost his certificate for 3 months. Initially, while the vessel was intact, bathers used the wreck as a dressing shed. During a dance, hosted on the beached ship, a kerosene lamp set the boat alight, destroying the superstructure. Her hulk was visible for many years, lasting more than hundred years on the beach.
