Deutsch: Eine Tonart wird im Rahmen der seit etwa 1600 etablierten Dur-Moll-Tonalität durch die Feststellung des Tongeschlechts (Dur oder Moll) und des Grundtons der verwendeten Tonleiter bestimmt. Beispiel: Tongeschlecht Dur plus Grundton A ergibt die Tonart A-Dur.

Français : Un mode est l'organisation des hauteurs d'une échelle majeur ou majeur autour d'une tonique. Par exemple: une échelle mode majeur sur la tonique “la” donne le mode “la majeur”.
Nederlands: De toonsoort of toonaard beschrijft het toonmateriaal waaruit een bepaald muziekstuk is opgebouwd. De toonsoort wordt vastgelegd door de grondtoon (tonica) en het toongeslacht. Als bijvoorbeeld de grondtoon “a” is en het toongeslacht “majeur”, dan is de toonsoort: “A-majeur” ook wel “A grote terts” of “A-groot” genoemd.
