English: Lieutenant Colonel Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (16 June 1792 – 5 October 1855), surveyor and explorer of south-eastern Australia, was born at Craigend in Stirlingshire, Scotland. In 1827 he took up an appointment as Assistant Surveyor General of New South Wales. The following year he became Surveyor General and remained in this position until his death. Mitchell was knighted in 1839 for his contribution to the surveying of Australia. (→Thomas Mitchell (explorer))
Français : Le Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (16 juin 1792 - 1855), est un géomètre et explorateur du sud-est de l'Australie, né à Grangemouth dans le Stirlingshire, en Écosse. Il a fait ses études à l'Université d'Edimbourg, mais la situation financière de sa famille après la mort de son père l'a amené à rejoindre l'armée en 1811. Il a servi au Portugal, sous les ordres de Sir George Murray, qui sera plus tard secrétaire d'état aux colonies, qui y était quartier-maître général de l'Armée de terre et dont il devint le principal adjoint. Il a appris l'arpentage dans l'armée et, en 1817, il épousa Mary Blunt à Lisbonne. Lorsque les guerres napoléoniennes furent terminées en 1815, Mitchell retourna à la morne vie de routine des soldats en temps de paix et en 1827, il fut heureux de prendre le poste d'arpenteur général de la Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, en remplacement de John Oxley. À ce poste, il a beaucoup fait pour améliorer la qualité et la précision de l'arpentage - une tâche essentielle dans une colonie où d'immenses étendues de terres ont été vendues à de nouveaux colons. L'une des premières routes topographiées sous sa direction a été la Great North Road, construite par les bagnards entre 1826 et 1836, qui reliait Sydney à la Vallée Hunter. La Great South Road, également topographiée par ses soins et construite par les bagnards, reliera Sydney à Goulburn. En 1834, il sera chargé de topographier dix-neuf comtés. Simple English: Mitchell was given a job as a surveyor in New South Wales in September 1827. His job was to map roads, and join existing small maps into one big map that showed all of New South Wales. After John Oxley died in 1828, Mitchell was made the Surveyor-General, in charge of all the survey work. He planned and improved the layout of roads, bridges, towns, and public reserves.
