| Description | NOAA Port Agent Joanne Pellegrino, stationed in Toms River, New Jersey removes an otolith (ear bone) from a Golden Tilefish, as part of a biological sampling exercise. Port Agents visit docks, where fish are off loaded by commercial fishers, to take samples, measure and weigh the fish. They sometimes remove the ear bone to determine the age and growth of the stock of fish. Agent Pellegrino sent this specimen to the lab in Woods Hole, MA where scientists will count the rings, as in a tree, to determine the age. All of this helps scientists learn more about the strength of the fish populations. This particular fish was caught by a New Jersey commercial fishing vessel. |
