200th Celebration Greetings from the Emerald Isle of Kodiak, Alaska! This summer, a group of severely wounded U.S. veterans from the Iraq war and Afghanistan conflict were invited to Kodiak as part of the Wounded Warrior Project’s Kodiak Outdoors Program. This non-profit organization provides tangible comfort and support to our severely-injured service members as they rehabilitate and transition successfully into civilian life. NOAA Fisheries’ Kodiak Laboratory staff provided a first class tour of the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center, and showed the veterans the shellfish and groundfish research that takes place in the North Pacific. NOAA Fisheries’ Kodiak Laboratory staff also volunteered their time to take these veterans on a number of deep-sea fishing, river fishing, and sightseeing trips. Kodiak Laboratory employees, the community of Kodiak, and its service organizations proudly joined to support this project and give a measure of hope and inspiration to those who have sacrificed so much. Pictured are (kneeling, from left): Beverly Malley, Claire Armistead (NOAA); Jim Allgood (cable TV host); Ryan Pavlu, Brian Neuman, Dan Barnes, and Kevin Pannell (veterans). (Standing, from left): Jan Haaga, Kathy Swiney, Rob Swanson (NOAA); and Tom Carpenter (veteran). |
