Description

200th Greetings from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Maryland!

The origin of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) can be traced back to 1979 as a growing awareness of climate events and their societal influence (such as El Niño; the severe winter blocking pattern of 1976; and ozone depletion) peaked the interest of the nation. Today CPC provides climate services to users in federal, state, and local governments, the research community, private industry, and the public, both in this country and abroad. Services include prediction of climate variability, monitoring of the climate system, development of global databases for determining the current state of climate, and assessments of the origins of climate anomalies. CPC activities and interests cover time scales ranging from weeks to seasons and include land, ocean, and atmosphere extending from the surface into the stratosphere. A major milestone in CPC's efforts to provide climate services occurred in January 1995, when CPC issued the first official long-lead outlook for US temperature and precipitation out to a year in advance.
