Description
Español: Retrato del célebre poeta y escritor español Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas (1580-1645), que fue señor de la Torre de Juan Abad, caballero de la Orden de Santiago y el máximo exponente del Conceptismo en España, siendo además enemigo acérrimo del insigne poeta cordobés Luis de Góngora y Argote, que era el máximo representante del Culteranismo. Este célebre lienzo, conservado en el Instituto Valencia de Don Juan, ha sido con frecuencia atribuido a Diego Velázquez, aunque en realidad solo es una de las tres copias del original perdido que pinto el célebre pintor hispalense y que fueron ejecutadas en su taller. Y el que se conserva en el Instituto Valencia de Don Juan perteneció desde el siglo XVII a los condes de Oñate, aunque en 1880 fue vendido a los condes de Valencia de Don Juan. Sin embargo, hay otras dos versiones de ella, hallándose una en el Wellington Museum de Londres y la otra en Madrid, en la colección de la familia de Xabier de Salas. Las dos primeras incluyen la inscripción alusiva al nombre del retratado, mientras que la última no, pero sí una «J» en el campo de la derecha, que es el resto de la firma del autor, que según los últimos estudios podría haber sido el pintor Juan van der Hamen.
