| Description |
Tegel ter ere van de opening van de verzonken tuin in 1999. John Tradescant The Younger (Kent 1608 – 1662). Hij was de zoon van John Tradescant (The Elder), destijds de verantwoordelijke voor de verschillende plantenkollecties van de Engelse koningin Henrietta Maria. Zoonlief studeerde in Canterbury en werd een ‘Freeman of the Gardeners Company’ in 1634. In 1638 volgde hij zijn vader op als beheerder van de koninklijke tuinen van Charles I. Het meest bekend blijft hij echter door zijn 3 botanische verzamelexpedities die hij ondernam naar Virginia in 1637, 1642 en 1654. Tal van planten die we nu kennen als waardevol voor tuin en park werden door hem voor het eerst geintroduceerd in Europa. Na deze botanische reizen publiceerde hij zijn ‘Musaeum Tradescantum’, de eerste in Engeland uitgegeven plantencatalogus. Samen met zijn vader zorgde hij voor de introductie van enkele honderden plantensoorten. Bron: Kruidtuin |
