インド同様のヒンドゥー教主流の国であり、首都のカトマンズにはパシュパテイナート（Pashupatinath）というインド亜大陸の4大シヴァ寺院のひとつに数えられるネパール最大のヒンドゥー寺院があり、その裏側にはガンジス川の支流でもあるパグマティ川が流れており、河原のガートでは一日中火葬の煙が絶えることはない。カトマンズの朝霧は、火葬場の煙といわれるほどである。上流階級の者ほど上流側のガートで焼かれる。輪廻転生を信じるヒンドゥー教徒は墓は作らない。焼かれた灰は当然ながら、すべて隠坊によって箒とバケツの水でパグマティ川に無造作に流される。また、火葬の際には、親族の男性は火葬の傍らで髪を剃る習慣がある。河原では、火葬台の脇で人々が沐浴をしたり少年が遺体から流された供物を盗もうとして咎められたりする光景が始終見られる。寺院自体はヒンドゥー教徒以外は立ち入れないが、火葬場は有料ながら誰でも見学できる。
