Description
English: CWGC gravestone of James William Burrows of the Royal Navy in the churchyard of St Nicholas' parish church in the village of Salthouse, Norfolk, England. James W Burrows was a signalman on HMS Princess Victoria. Around midnight on 18 May 1940 his ship struck a mine near the mouth of the River Humber. She sank in just a few minutes with the loss of 37 lives. Only nine of the casualties have known graves, and seven of those are in Norfolk, the bodies being washed up on the North Norfolk coast a month later. One of the washed up seaman was 21 year old Burrows, who was found on Salthouse beach. His service No. C/JX 144897. Princess Victoria was the first purpose-built cross-channel car ferry and was laid down by William Denny & Bros of Dumbarton, Scotland for the LMS. She was the first stern loading cross-channel car ferry.
