Mothing Nights 8/8/14 & 8/9/14 Discussion on FB:

Roger Kendrick: I would suspect the red pigment is made up of some unstable compound(s) that degrades with time and exposure to daylight or ultraviolet light (from the sun, normally), ending up at the straw colour one sees in your second photo.

Jacob Gorneau: I by no means have any certain idea, but could newer individuals have the bright red, and as the scales wear while the moth ages, the color dims to a yellow? The green on Eumarozia malachitana changes to a brownish color as time goes on. Perhaps that could also be the case here.

Roger Kendrick: that is also a pigment degradation example, Jacob

Jacob Gorneau: Roger, sorry, I didn't update the post before you commented.

Roger Kendrick: no problem, and you raise a valid point that is faced by all Lepidoptera - that of scale wear. I am aware that some species have scales of two colours, with one colour at the tip and a second colour close to the base of the scale. However, scale wear would need to be even throughout to result in even recolouration, AND the scales across the whole pattern element would need to be bicoloured - this last point strikes me as unlikely, though by no means impossible.

Roger Kendrick: I should add that I do not favour scale wear, as scales (in my experience) seem to be easily detached at the base, rather than wearing from tip to base.
