Summary[edit]

Description

This is an example of a LB&SCR B1 class locomotive, of which 36 were built between 1882 and 1891. Hayling was built in 1890 and finally withdrawn in 1926.

The first of the class Gladstone was preserved and is now at the National Railway Museum York.

Incidently the first LB&SCR Engine to carry the number 179 was built as a small batch of 4 locos in 1864 at Brighton. It was later modified by Stroudley and also named Hayling.

This photo was taken from an old original photo we came across while helping to clear the house of a deceased friend. I have uploaded it to Flickr in the hope that it might be interesting to steam enthusiasts.
