Description

Having visited Estonia and Latvia on tourist holidays where I managed to get a few photos at the capital city stations, Lithuania was the first Baltic States country I've visited with the intention to make a start to explore the passenger rail system.

Tying it in as the start point for a multi-country trip in May 2018, I flew into the capital city, Vilnius late on a Saturday evening. Sunday gave me all day to explore the country before a night in the second largest city, Kaunas. I was constrained by dates of running for the cross-border train to Poland so Monday saw me move on. However this 'toe in the water' visit was enough to encourage me to go back. The system is well run with a largely modern fleet of DMUs and EMUs mostly built in the last 10 years or so.

Here we see a 3-car version of the fleet of the double deck EMUs built for the electrified line from Vilnius to Kaunas. Unit EJ575-012 is on train 751, 09:35 Vilnius to Kaunas on 6 May 2018.
