Summary[edit]

Description

When a molecular or atom absorbs energy from a charged particle striking it, the molecular goes from the ground state to an excited state, i.e. one or more electrons move from the energy level (orbital) they normally occupy to an energy state greater (higher orbital) than its ground state.

However, electrons do not stay in an excited state for very long. When they return back to their ground state, they release the energy gained by emitting a photon of light.
