English: Looking north at the intersection of Independence Avenue SW and 12th Street Expressway in Washington, D.C., in the United States.
The Expressway is a four-block long tunnel beneath the National Mall. Opened on July 31, 1962, it was designed to link the 14th Street Bridge with downtown north of the National Mall. It was not only supposed to get commuters to their jobs on the north side of the Mall fast and easily, but -- had it been extended to K Street NW -- it was supposed to connect with a cut-and-cover highway in a tunnel beneath K Street NW. Indeed, the National Capital Planning Commission even wanted to build a new bridge over East Potomac Park and the Potomac River that would more easily align with the 12th Street Expressway. But citizen opposition to these fantastic (and ill-conceived) ideas was too strong. Only the Mall tunnel, which was the first segment built, got constructed. |
