Description
English: The 1605 "graffiti" on Inscription Rock, by Juan de Oñate, the colonial governor of the Santa Fe de Nuevo México province in the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
  • It is the oldest inscription at El Morro National Monument, New Mexico.
  • The inscription reads: "Paso por aq[u]i el adelantado don ju/an oñate del descubrimiento de la mar del sur a 16 de Abril del 1605."
  • Showing 'historic' vandalism to the inscription, at left there is "Casados/1727" and "J[ose?]parelo". On right, "P. Joseph de la Candelaria."
