Summary[edit]

Description

An illustration of ballooning, from the Journal des Dames et des Modes, 1797-1798.

The writing on the falling pieces of paper reads: "Rapport sur le premier voyage aërien du Citoyen Garnerin avec la Citoyenne Henri" (Andre-Jacques Garnerin was one of the most famous balloonists of the time).

According to French Wikipedia, the original caption to this illustration was "Ascension en Montgolfière par le physicien Garnerin et la Citoyenne Henri".

The lady is wearing a classic late 1790's "Grecian" Directoire gown -- which doesn't seem like very warm attire for a balloon journey!

Note the variant version of the French tricolor.

For another early female balloonist, see Image:Sophieblanchard-milan.jpg
