| Description |
The Swallow Sidecar Company of England produced their first car in 1927, the Austin Seven Swallow (a rebodied Austin Seven). The SS-1 and SS-2 were produced in 1932. In 1934, they changed their name to SS Cars. 1935 saw the 4 cyl SS Jaguar 1½ litre and 6 cyl SS Jaguar 2½ litre Saloons and Drophead Coupes. Also the SS Jaguar 90 open sports car, Updated models in 1938 were the SS Jaguar 100 open sports car and the 6 cyl SS Jaguar 3½ litre Saloon and Drophead Coupe The '100' was so named to reflect the theoretical 100 mph maximum speed of the vehicle. The 125hp 3485cc 6 cyl engine was a development of the old 2663cc Standard pushrod unit converted from side valve to overhead valve with a new cylinder head. Widely considered to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing Jaguar cars, it is also one of the rarest, with only 309 being built. Because of the Nazi connotations attached to the initials SS, after the second World War, the company was renamed Jaguar in 1945. Photographed at the Peterson Museum |
