Summary

[edit]
Description

The central portion of massive Tiananmen Square is the site of the Monument to the People’s Heroes with the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong back behind it.

Tiananmen Square was originally designed and built in 1651. It is named after the Tiananmen, the “Gate of Heavenly Peace” on the square’s northern edge which leads to the Forbidden City. (This view is looking south.) Starting in 1954, Tiananmen Square was greatly expanded and altered such that today it can accommodate 600,000 people. The square is largely open with just a few trees and no benches.

The Monument to the People’s Heroes was built from August 1952 to May 1958 at what was then the southern end of the square. It is a memorial to the martyrs of revolutionary struggle during the 19th and 20th centuries. Eight major revolutionary episodes are depicted in the bas-reliefs around the base of the central tower. The inscription on the front of the tower—in Mao Zedong’s handwriting—reads, “Eternal glory to the people’s heroes!”

The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong (technically Chairman Mao Memorial Hall) was erected shortly after his death on September 9, 1976. Although Mao wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed and put on public display in a crystal coffin. We elect to skip the 40-minute line to go inside to see him.
