Summary[edit]

Description
English: The assembly of buildings found at the current Faculty of Pharmacy was originally built for the German School in Addis Abeba. Construction of the building started in 1957 and was completed in 1961. It was officially opened in 1966 during a visit by the late Emperor Haile Selassie I. The Sports hall and the Assembly hall stand oriented with their front facade to the south. To shade this functions which demand ambient day light and high interaction between the inside and the outside, the southern face of the building is composed of, a double façade system. A curtain wall shaded by horizontal concrete louvers. And the structural columns of the halls also serving as vertical shading elements by the virtue of their 70cm depth. The pattern of the horizontal louvers creates a dynamic visual experience which can also be associated with the function of these halls. A thoughtful integration of the classical and a modern design approach can be witnessed with the combination of the pitched roof and the systematic double façade. The playful rhythm of the louvers is matched with a robust concrete sculpture standing in the court yard of the compound.
