| Description |
Der Platz am Sund hatte sich den Kaufleuten und Handwerkern, die im 13. Jahrhundert in das von Slawen besiedelte Gebiert gekommen waren, zur Stadtgründung durch die Lage regelrecht angeboten. Stralsund erhielt 1234 das lübische Stadtrecht. Der alte Stadtkern ist das Gebiet um den Alten Markt am Rathaus. Die wirtschaftliche Grundlage der Stadt bildete von Anfang an der Handel. Die ältesten Gebäude der Stadt sind zugleich auch die größten: die drei Pfarrkirchen St. Nikolai (1270 – 1350), St. Marien (13. – 15. Jh.) und St. Jakobi (13. – 14. Jh.) sowie das Katharinen- und Johanniskloster (13. Jh.). Während die Renaissance-Bauten zumeist die Backsteinarchitektur zeigen, erscheinen sämtliche Häuser des Barocks als Putzbauten. Der architektonische Zusammenklang von Profan- und Sakralbau mit dem Wohnungsbau des Bürgers verleiht der alten Ostsee-Stadt ihren besonderen Reiz. In den zahlreichen Giebelhäusern ist mehr als nur die Backsteinkunst des Mittelalters lebendig geblieben. Die Gebäude in Backsteingotik überliefern in anschaulicher Weise Wirtschaftsgeschichte der vergangenen Jahrhunderte. Das gesamte Altstadtgebiet ist heute als UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe anerkannt. |
