Description

Accession: 2010-107-8 Flag, "Jolly Roger" USS Hawes FFG-53 51"H X 65"w.

Flag was designed by Admiral Richard E. Hawes. It is a rectangular black flag with gold fringe and is only authorized to be flown on ships that bear the name Hawes. The authorization was granted by the President. The four red hash marks represent four engagments that the Admiral and his crew successfully engaged in. Admiral Hawes was awarded two Navy Crosses for submarine salvage operations during World War II.
