Description2nd Century Nereid Mosaic From Hillside Houses of Ephesus.jpg | The Nereids were the 100 (or by some accounts, 50) daughters of Nereus and Doris. Nereus was a Titan (offspring of Gaia who ruled before the age of Olympian gods) who made his peace with Zeus after the war against the Titans. Together with his wife, Doris (a sea nymph), Nereus had many beautiful daughters who, in later times, were known as the beautiful attendants of the Olympian god Poseidon. This mosaic presents a classic (and often repeated) scene of a Nereid riding a hippocamp (half-horse, half-fish) being led by a merman. Some people interpret scenes such as this as being Poseidon's son Triton leading his bride, others as the Nereid Thetis being led, still others as Amphitrite going to her wedding with Poseidon. This mosaic is located in the Hillside Houses of ancient Ephesus and dates from the late 1st or 2nd century AD. | ||
