Description
English: 330-PS-6748 (111-SC-1500219): A view of the propulsion unit of the rocket sled shows the six 4500 pound thrust rockets that drove Lieutenant Colonel Stapp, 421 mph on the ground. The sled, designed by Northrop Aircraft Inc., can mount up to twelve rockets. It runs on heavy steel tracks, seven feet apart and is braked striking water locks in the 18 inch deep trough. Scoops in the underside of the sled funnel water through vents and furnish a measureable braking force which can be varied. Colonel Stapp on his recent run, was a subjected to a braking force of 22 “Gs,” which means his body assumed a weight of 3960 pounds. Photograph released June 8, 1954. (3/17/2015).
