Description
English: 330-PS-7729 (USN 709563): Jim Ryan, Gyrodyne Test Pilot puts the XRON-1 Rotocycle through a test over a sparse section of Long Island, New York. Master Caption: This model XRON-1 “Rotocycle” is an ultra-small, one-man helicopter designed for the U.S. Navy. Designed, manufactured and successfully test flown by the Gyrodyne Company of America, Inc., St. James, Long Island, New York. The tiny craft recently was put through its paces for observes from the Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics. The midget helicopter, which weighs less than 500 pounds, fully loaded with pilot, performs all basic helicopter maneuvers and cruises with great east. Test reports indicate that the rotorcycle had excellent control qualities at all speeds and its smoothness from vibration standpoint is beyond expectation. The rotorcycle’s intended use is for observation, liaison and small unit tactical maneuvers. In addition, the requirements call for the rotorcycle to require low training time, be simple to maintain, and to be adaptable to low cost production. This rotorcycle is collapsible and can be folded into a small package for east transportation. Another feature of the craft is that the basic design will accommodate different engine through the range of 40 to 75 horse power. The Navy was the first to explore advantages of the coaxial rotor system in several different applications other than the rotorcycle. Photograph released 28 February 1956. (2/18/2015).
