Description
English: 330-PS-8339 (USN 709830): Luc Secretan, one of the scientists working with the Earth satellite project at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. is recording some of the data related to tests he has just run on the tiny erosion gauges which will be used in the scientific Earth satellite to be launched during the International Geophysical Year. These small gauges will record the degree to which the satellite skin is worn away the impact of the micrometeorites as they strike the tiny man-made “moon” as it passes around the Earth at altitudes ranging from 200 to 15000 miles. The project is being sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences and National Science Foundation as part of the U.S. program for participation in the International Geophysical Year. Photograph released April 25, 1957. (1/29/2015).
