Description
English: 330-PS-8415 (USN 709896): Here is the first photograph showing the shape of the U.S. Navy’s new “look of tomorrow” radar plane now in pre-production planning by Lockheed. Resembling a long winged 1649A Starliner, but with a “flying saucer parasol” and a twin-fin tail, the huge sky sentry is designed to provide “high, wide and then some” expansion of America’s serial-warning system. In addition to the four Allison T-56 pre-jet engines, the successor to the current flying radar stations also will be equipped with two Westinghouse J-34 Turbojets, attached in the wingtip pods. Photograph released June 5, 1957. (1/29/2015).
