Description
English: 330-PS-8844 (A-158242): The Russian rocket satellite BETA (Mattnick) photographed through a tracking camera at the Air Force Missile Test Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida, at about 6:05 p.m., December 21, 1957. Light conditions were near optimum, it being dark on the Earth’s surface while the rocket was in full sunlight some 135 miles above the ground and within 200 miles of the camera. Using 70mm film, the tracking camera used a 24 inch aperture and a focal length of up to 500 inches. An analysis of the film by RCA Services Inc., operators of the camera, estimate the length of the satellite to be between 74 and 84 feet. Photograph released March 19, 1958. (12/09/2014).
