Summary[edit]

Description

Pre-war shophouses numbers 37-45 facing Lebuh Ampang (Ampang Street) in central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as seen towards the southeast.

Shophouses numbers 37 and 39 (the taller white shophouses to the right) are abandoned and significantly dilapidated, while shophouses numbers 41, 43 and 45 (to the left; 45 being the yellow and leftmost building) were dramatically altered (and rebuilt from the inside), defacing some, if not all, of the building's original designs. The remains of 37 to 43's original designs suggest that the buildings were once constructed and completed at the same time in a symmetrical layout, which 37 and 39 still retains. As such, the current facade of 43 was originally alike that of 37, but was altered to mirror 39 and 41, albeit in a shoddy manner.

The lack of clear guidelines for architectural conservation in the majority of Malaysian cities and towns means unregulated neglect, alterations or demolition of lesser known pre-war buildings are common in the country.
