Deutsch: 3D-Ansicht (Anaglyphenbild) der unmittelbaren Umgebung des vermeintlichen "Marsgesichtes", das sich rechts der Bildmitte befindet. Aus dem senkrecht auf die Marsoberfläche gerichteten Nadirkanal des vom DLR betriebenen Kamerasystems HRSC und einem der vier Stereokanäle lassen sich sogenannte Anaglyphenbilder erstellen, die bei Verwendung einer Rot-Blau- oder Rot-Grün-Brille einen realistischen, dreidimensionalen Blick auf die Landschaft ermöglichen.

Am 22. Juli 2006 nahm die vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) betriebene hochauflösende Stereokamera (HRSC) auf der ESA-Sonde Mars Express im Orbit 3253 einen Teil der Region Cydonia auf. Dieses Gebiet erlangte vor genau 30 Jahren zweifelhafte Berühmtheit, weil in den damals veröffentlichten Aufnahmen der amerikanischen Viking I-Sonde ein Bergmassiv zu erkennen ist, das von oben betrachtet einem Gesicht ähnelt. Nun wurde das vermeintliche Gesicht auf dem Mars von der HRSC mit einer Auflösung von ca. 13,7 Metern pro Bildpunkt erneut aufgenommen. "Und wie nicht anders zu erwarten war", erklärt Prof. Ralf Jaumann, Principal Investigator (PI) des HRSC-Experiments vom DLR-Institut für Planetenforschung, "ist auch in unseren Bildern nichts anderes zu sehen, als ein in der Ebene von der Erosion geprägter Inselberg."

Die hier gezeigten Abbildungen zeigen einen Ausschnitt der Cydonia-Region bei etwa 41 Grad nördlicher Breite und 350 Grad östlicher Länge. Die erstmals am 25. Juli 1976 von Viking I abgebildete Formation hat in den letzten 30 Jahren als "Gesicht auf dem Mars" für manche Schlagzeile gesorgt. Das Viking-Bild zeigte die für diese Region typischen abgerundeten "Inselberge", wobei eine dieser Formationen in der NASA-Pressemitteilung vom 31. Juli 1976 als "einem menschlichen Kopf ähnlich" beschrieben wird. Ralf Jaumann erinnert sich: "Schon damals gingen sämtliche an Viking beteiligten Marsforscher von einer optischen Täuschung aus. Der Beleuchtungseffekt ergab sich durch einen Sonnenstand, der die Oberflächenformen an diesem Berg Schatten werfen ließ, die den Anschein erweckten, dass die Formation Augen, Nase und Mund habe."
