English: BR Southern Region 4-TC Trailer Control set 410 is tailing an Up service from Bournemouth to Waterloo during a stop at Basingstoke in the Summer of 1977, taken on a Kodak Instamatic 126. Built in 1967 for the Bournemouth Electrification scheme, the TC units had no traction motors of their own, but relied on the leading 4-REP "Electric Deltic" units, equipped with 3200HP of installed capacity, to drag them to Waterloo. At the Bournemouth end, the 4-TC would be decoupled and attached to a Class 33/1 diesel-electric locomotive for the journey over the non-electrified line to Weymouth. On returning, the 4-TC cab offered full control of the diesel loco. On arrival at Bournemouth, the loco would come off and the 4-TC would be attached to a London-bound 4-REP (sometimes with another 4-TC already attached) to continue it's journey. An elegant solution to the problem of not enough Government funding for full electrification which persisted until the section from Weymouth to Bournemouth was finally energised in 1988, at which point new 5-WES units (using reclaimed motors & electrical control units from the 4-REPs) replaced the 4-TC/4-REP combinations. One 4-TC has been preserved in mainline order with TfL.
