Denis Papin (1647-c.1713), French physicist, mathematician and inventor - <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Papin" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Papin</a>

On the upper landing of the staircase is a monument to Denis Papin by sculptor <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aim%c3%a9_Millet" rel="noreferrer nofollow"> Aimé Millet </a> (1819-1891), <a href="http://archives.blois.fr/article.php?laref=486&titre=1880" rel="noreferrer nofollow">unveiled on 19 August 1880</a>. Papin was inventor of the steam digester (the forerunner of the domestic pressure cooker). His work inspired the development of the steam engine. A Huguenot refugee, he died destitute in London.
