Original Image Name: Piciwiki_israel_84698_שקמה באשדוד.jpg Notes: מתוך סדרת נופי צומח עצי ושיחי תרבות של עוזי פז. השיקמה היא עץ עָנֵף ועגול-צמרת ממוצא טרופי, אחד העצים הבולטים בדרום שפלת החוף. גדל בארץ בעיקר במקומות עם מי-תהום גבוהים. השקמה הובאה לראשונה ארצה בידי אדם כבר בשחר התקופה ההיסטורית, לפני 6,500 שנה, ואולי אף כבר לפני 10,000 שנה. העץ ניטע בארץ כנראה בעיקר לשם צילו, גם לשם פריו.העץ מאריך ימים, אך אין לדעת את גילו, כי אינו יוצר טבעות שנתיות סדירות. אין לעץ בארץ מקצב-פעילות ברור, ויש לו למשל מחזורים אחדים של פריחה באותה שנה.
