Description

A U.S. Navy Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 137628) from Attack Squadron VA-215 Barn Owls ready for launching aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CVA-19) in 1965. IN the background are a Vought F-8C Crusader (NP-440, BuNo 147008) from Fighter Squadron VF-24 Red Checkertails and an F-8E from VF-211 Checkmates (NP-106, BuNo 150914). The aircraft were assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 21 (CVW-21) for a deployment to Vietnam from 21 October 1964 to 29 May 1965.

The photo was taken during attacks by the carriers of Task Force 77, USS Ranger (CVA-61), USS Coral Sea (CVA-43), and USS Hancock (CVA-19), which conducted air strikes against North Vietnamese bases utilized as training and staging bases for the infiltration of South Vietnam on 7 and 11 Feb 1965 and on 16 and 19 Mar 1965.
