Summary[edit]

Description

Two U.S. Naval Air Reserve Unit Louisiana Douglas AD-4NA Skyraider (BuNo 126986, 127002) of Attack Squadron VA-822 in flight. They were flying near Pecan Island in the Gulf of Mexico to drop fuel and cannon fire on a blowout gas well in an attempt to set it afire as a hazard to shipping. The pilots were LCDR Joel Morris, USNR, Commanding Officer of VA-822 and LCDR Harold Wheelahan.

127002 was later sold to the French Armée de l'Air ("No. 61"). It was then transferred to the air force of Gabon ("TR-LQE") and is still airworthy with the French civil registry as "F-AZHK".
