| Description |
English: A Chilly Refuge Whether this was where Constantine I ended up dead has been discussed by earlier contributors. Even the interpretative boards which abound on Fife Ness don't tell the same story, one of them talking about a Constantine who allegedly died in 943. But this was Constantine II, who didn't die in 943, but resigned the throne and became a hermit (in a cave?) in that year - whence he urged his successor to such upright and moral actions as fighting the English.
But someone certainly spent some time here as there are early Christian carvings on the walls. It can't have been warm though: that's snow lying below the high tide line... |
