Description
Français : Peinture de John Lavery, huile sur toile intitulée "A Moorish dance" (Une danse Maure), datée de 1892. Cette peinture a été peinte durant la période tangéroise du peintre. En effet, dès 1891, le peintre part pour le Maroc en faisant une première escale à Tanger[1], l'occasion pour lui de captiver l'essence Maure du Maroc à travers plusieurs peintures d'une valeur anthropologique, comme ici, où il illustre à travers sa peinture une danseuse, qui semble être une haratine (esclave subsaharienne) à en juger par la couleur foncée choisie pour la peindre, dansant une danse mauresque. La femme est vêtue d'un Caftan marocain traditionnel de couleur vert brodé au fil d'or et semble porter, sur elle, plusieurs Caftans, un autre de couleur rouge que l'on peut apercevoir. Il était de coutume, au Maroc, de porter plusieurs Caftans l'un sur l'autre, et cet ensemble de vêtement a pour appellation "Takchita", tout comme il était coutume que les esclaves des riches marchands marocains, portaient eux-aussi des Caftans de grandes valeurs.
English: Painting by John Lavery, oil on canvas entitled "A Moorish dance", dated 1892. This painting was painted during the painter's Tangier period. Indeed, in 1891, the painter left for Morocco with a first stopover in Tangier[2], the opportunity for him to captivate the Moorish essence of Morocco through several paintings of anthropological value, like here, where he illustrates through his painting a dancer, who seems to be a haratin (sub-Saharan slave) judging by the dark color chosen to paint her, dancing a Moorish dance. The woman is dressed in a traditional green Moroccan Caftan embroidered with gold thread and seems to be wearing several Caftans on her, another red one that can be seen. It was customary in Morocco to wear several Caftans one on top of the other, and this set of clothing is called "Takchita", just as it was customary for the slaves of rich Moroccan merchants to also wear great value Caftans.
