Summary[edit]
DescriptionA calm day at Bowling but a storm may be brewing - geograph.org.uk - 961112.jpg |
English: A calm day at Bowling but a storm may be brewing Bowling Basin is effectively the western end of the Forth & Clyde Canal; only a single lock separates it from the rise and fall of the tide. The tall white building was the former customs house, for Bowling was a major port for goods to and from Glasgow, the Monklands coalfield and a good part of central Scotland; the building now houses the local British Waterways offices. To its right is a former swing bridge by which the Lanarkshire & Dunbartonshire Railway crossed the canal; the railway across it closed over forty years ago and the bridge had probably not been opened for some time before that as the canal then was on the point of abandonment; currently it and its adjacent viaduct arches and bridges over the still-open former North British Railway line and Dumbarton Road are fenced off. |
