Summary[edit]
| Description |
English: A circular brick wall in a field This wall surrounds a conical depression and, therefore, is not a sheep pen (there is no gap or gate in the wall) but the remains of a bell pit. A shaft would have been dug vertically down to a coal seam and then coal would have been extracted sideways from the base of the shaft - thus forming a bell pit. Once it was no longer in use, the structure would collapse leaving a conical depression. |
