Description |
English: This image is a close-up of wood. There are different shades of brown and some green and black. There are carvings in the wood that look like a sideways VI. A faint mark left by a craftsman's chisel forming the roman numeral "VI" or 4, can be seen in this photograph of a historic window frame. Roman numerals were commonly used by craftsman especially prior to the 20th century, to designate complex building components that were assembled in the field. The numbering system would help to designate which components were custom fitted to a particular accompanying piece, in this case a window frame and window sashes.
