Description
English: A Qajar lacquer penbox (qalamdan), signed Najaf 'Ali, depicting scenes from Layla and Majnun

Persia, dated AH 1259/ AD 1843-4

Inscriptions: to the penbox, couplets from Nizami's Layla and Majnun, signed ya shah-e najaf! 1259, 'O The king of Najaf! 1259 (1843-4)'; to the inkwell, a Persian couplet (poet unidentified), qalam gofta keh man shah-e jahanam, qalam-zan ra be-dawlat miresanam, 'The pen said that I am the king of the World, I deliver wealth to the scribe.'

The famous painter Najaf 'Ali signed many of his works. The signature on the present lot takes the form Najaf 'Ali Isfahani, in honour of Imam 'Ali, known as shah-e najaf. He mainly worked on lacquer, depicting various subjects, including European and Indian. Not much is known about his early life. He was honoured with the title naqqash-bashi (The Chief Painter) by Nasir al-Din Shah. His recorded work is dated between 1227 (1812-13) and 1274 (1857-8).
