Description
English: After a long journey which took us from Kermanshah to Sarpol-e Zahab (western Iran), while on the road back to Kermanshah we left the main road trying to go to Qhaleh-ye Ardeshir, a Parthian era fortress. Unfortunatly, time was too short and we decided to turn back. We then, saw a strange cemetery close to the road, I can’t locate exactly the place.
  • The cemetery looked very old, and was in a very nice and peaceful place. The place had some modern stone made vaulted buildings, their style clearly look unchanged since the iwans of the old Sasanians. Some strange brick tower-shaped constructions could be seen, that I don’t know exactly what it is. Here, two stone & mortar vaulted constructions, and a brick tower-shaped construction.
  • The surprise lay in the very old gravestones left abandoned, partially buried, some laying down out of the soil. Some of them dated probably of the early Islamic era as testify the patterns sculptured. Rosettes flowers, stylized Cyprus trees, all well known old Persian figures, which took their origins directly in the ancient Iran. Such figures are still used in the patterns of nomad carpets.
  • In fact, this nowhere lost place was worth a visit and some pictures. Taken somewhere between Sarpol-e Zahab and Kermanshah, in Kermanshah Province, near Iraqi border in western Iran.
  • May 2009.
