Summary[edit]

Description
English: Western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system on Earth, with 426 miles known and mapped as of fall 2022. The name does not refer to the early discovery of fossil mastodon or mammoth bones here. Rather, the name refers to the immense size of many rooms and passages.

Seen here is Main Cave, the principal trunk passage in the Mammoth Cave Ridge part of the system. The rocks are gray, marine limestones of the upper Ste. Genevieve Limestone (upper Middle Mississippian). The projecting wall is "Acute Angle". At this site, the path of the original subterranean river that flowed through this giant canyon passage took a hard turn to the right (when viewed in the downstream direction) - about 115 degrees. The projecting wall itself forms an approximately 20 degree angle (= acute). This picture is looking upstream - the passage continues to the left on the far side of the projecting wall.

Locality: Acute Angle, between Giant's Coffin and Star Chamber, Main Cave, Mammoth Cave Ridge, Mammoth Cave National Park, western Kentucky, USA
