Title
Adelaide City View - looking south-west across Victoria Square - circa 1916
Description

This photo shows an aerial view of Adelaide looking south-west across Victoria Square. The Tivoli Theatre can be seen in the centre of the photo and the Central Market can be seen to the left. The 'new' Tivoli Theatre opened 6 September 1913. Originally seating over 2,100 people, the theatre was used almost exclusively for variety theatre, including vaudeville, revues and musicals during the 1910s and early 1920s. It was renamed the Prince of Wales Theatre on 28 Aug. 1920 and then in 1930, it became known as the Tivoli once again until 1962 - when it became Her Majesty's Theatre. Another remodelling was undertaken in 1979 as a result of the Dunstan Government saving the theatre from possible demolition, at which time it reopened as the Opera Theatre. In 1988 it once again became Her Majesty's Theatre.

The original Central Market first opened on Grote Street in 1869 and the two story building shown in photo ,opened in 1900. At its commencement, it opened on Tuesdays and Saturdays with 50 to 100 produce carts.
