Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Aerial view looking northwest at the partially finished Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. Image was taken in 1919. North is to the upper middle-left.

As constructed, Memorial Amphitheater ended in a small plaza atop a retaining wall, with a granite balustrade on the edge. The following year, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added to this plaza.

The road running from middle-right of this image to lower left is Farragut Avenue. The road curving in the lower-right corner is Porter Avenue. The road running slightly diagonally to the far left is McPherson Avenue. In the upper left corner can be seen some buildings belonging to Fort Myer. The town of Rosslyn is visible along the far upper edge of the photograph.

Arlington House (the Robert E. Lee National Memorial) is the structure in the trees above and slightly to the right of the amphitheater.

The V-shaped road coming in from the middle left is Lawton Avenue; the slender shaft of the Spanish-American War Memorial can be seen at its apex. The V-shaped road to the left of the memorial is Sigsbee Drive. The large round base from which the tall column protrudes is the USS Maine Mast Memorial.

The Potomac River and the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge can be seen in the upper right corner.
