This is an Aesthetic Movement overmantle, from Ireland, circa 1890. An overmantle is the mirror that one places over the mantle of a fireplace.
It is notable for its classic Aesthetic features including:
- Ebonized wood with gilded highlights in the carvings.
- Use of stylized peacock feathers (they look like a hieroglyphics of ferns), and stylized flowers.
- A colored painting of a nature scene at the top, in this case several colored birds within a bough of flowers.
