Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gilded bronze forehead plate of a lamellar helmet depicting the coronation of King Agilulf (copy)
  • Valdinievole, Province Lucca, Region Toscana, Italy

This unique forehead plate of a lamellar helmet measures 18.9 cm in length and 6.7 cm in height. The depiction is symmetrically arranged, showing in the center a ruler with a long beard and elaborate garb on a throne with a footstool. His left hand clasps a sword while the right is raised in a gesture of benediction or of sovereignty. The ruler on the throne is flanked by two heavily armed warriors wearing lamellar helmets and armor and bearing spears and round shields with bosses. Between the heads of these three figures are punched letters: D(omino) N(ostro) REG(i) AG(ilu). From each of the two sides, a Victoria with a cornucopia and a standard with the punched inscription VICTORIA hastens toward the center, along with two servants, the outermost of whom bears before him a crown topped by a cross. On both sides the scene is bounded by towers. The portrayal is frequently interpreted as the coronation of Agilulf.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. The original is held at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence, Italy; this copy is held at the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Mainz, Germany.
Deutsch: Stirnplatte eines Lamellenhelms aus vergoldeter Bronze mit Darstellung von der Krönung des Langobardenkönigs Agilulf(Kopie)
  • Valdinievole, Provinz Lucca, Region Toscana, Italien
