Summary[edit]
DescriptionAl-Muizz Street, Old Cairo, al-Qāhirah, CG, EGY (47859477762).jpg | Up this busy Cairo Street in the heart of Old Cairo is the Al-Ashraf Mosque, a Mamluk-era structure on Al-Muizz Street. Constructed by Barsbay, a Circassian sultan who ruled the Mamluk Empire from 1422 to 1438, the construction of this mosque began in the year 1423 and it was completed in 1424. The mosque is part of a larger complex, which includes two sabils, a madrasa, and a mausoleum, with Sufi lodgings that originally existed in the complex having been destroyed. The entire complex is sheathed in a skin of stone, which primarily consists of limestone and sandstone, but also includes some other stone to create a colorful striped pattern on the front facade. Like many Mamluk buildings, the mosque has very intricate ornate geometric detailing. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get close enough to this mosque to get better photos, but it does stand out along the lower stretches of Al Muizz. |
